It can work wonders for eczema, poison ivy, insect bites, dermatitis, and so much more. Here’s the lowdown on this awesome skincare hack (for adults and kids!)

What is colloidal oatmeal?

Colloidal oatmeal is ground oatmeal that has been formulated into a liquid or a paste. It can be applied to the body or used in the bath as a way to protect and moisturize skin.

We have data* showing it has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, and it is FDA approved as an over-the-counter skin protectant.

What conditions is it helpful for?

I have seen colloidal oatmeal baths and paste work wonders for eczema flares, insect bites, poison ivy, contact dermatitis, and even diaper rash.

It has even been shown to reduce the need for topical steroids for patients with eczema.

What are the possible side effects?

In general, colloidal oatmeal is tolerated pretty well. As with ANYTHING else you put on your skin, it is possible to have some irritation, but this is uncommon.

(Obviously, if you have an oat allergy, you shouldn’t use it).

I’m sold! How do I use it?

This depends a bit on the specific product you purchase. Although it can be made at home, it can be challenging to grind the oatmeal to a fine enough consistency, so I usually recommend purchasing it. My personal favorite product is the Aveeno line (affiliate link).

In general, colloidal oatmeal can come in many forms: bath treatments, soaps, body washes, shampoos, lotions and creams. I like the Aveeno bath packets as well as the moisturizing cream (which we use on my son with eczema daily).

Oatmeal Bath:

This is best for widespread skin irritation, such as a general eczema flare or itching.

  • Fill the tub with lukewarm water

  • Pour about 1 cup of colloidal oatmeal product into the tub under running water

  • Mix to help dissolve into the water and then soak for about 10 minutes

Oatmeal paste

This is best for patches of dry irritated skin, for example poison ivy or an itchy insect bite.

  • Make a paste by mixing colloidal oatmeal and water

  • Apply to body and leave for 10-15 minutes

  • Rinse off gently with lukewarm water and pat dry

I find colloidal oatmeal to be a very versatile item that is worth having in your medicine cabinet, especially if your child is prone to sensitive skin and eczema.
